what is IVF

WHAT IS IVF?

IVF or In Vitro Fertilization is an infertility treatment method in which the sperm and ovum are synthesized out of the body in laboratory area, and after the fertilization the fetus will be transferred in to the uterus.

WHAT IS MICRO-INJECTION OR ICSI?

ICSI means sperm injection into the ovum cytoplasm. In this method, an alive sperm that is chosen from the sperm sample taken from the man is injected into one of his spouse’s ovum.

IN WHAT CASES IVF IS USED?

Obstruction or adhesion of oviduct

Infertility due to man including short number of sperms and its quality reduction (Their shape and movement)

Endometriosis or intrauterine adhesion

Infertility because of ovarian problems and unknown cases

WHAT FACTORS ARE EFFECTIVE IN IVF SUCCESS?

Patient’s age

Quality of sperm and ovum

Uterus condition for accepting fetus and pregnancy maintaining

WHAT ARE THE STEPS OF IVF?

1.      Stimulation of ovulation by taking medical treatment

Medications are prescribed according to the type of infertility, patient’s age and hormone condition, responding amount of ovary while doing sonography and physician’s discretion. For this purpose, medications like HMG and FSH will be taken.

These medications affect the ovum and increase the number of the growing ovum. So the chance of fertilization and pregnancy will increase.

2.      Taking ovum from ovary

Frequent sonography will be done in order to control and check the follicle growth. When follicles become mature enough, HCG is injected to the patient. 34-36 hours after having injection, the ovum will be taken out from the ovary in the operation room and under anesthesia.

3.      Synthesizing the ovum with sperm and making fetus in laboratory area

On the operation day, it is necessary for the man to gather his sperm sample in a sterile container and give it to the laboratory. After initial checking and washing the sperm, the suitable sperm will be chosen for fertilization.

4.      Transferring the fetus into the uterus

Transferring the fetus does not need any anesthesia, so the patient does not need to be fasting. The process of fetus transferring is short. For transferring, the patient needs to be lied down on a suitable bed. The physician transfers the catheter containing fetus into the uterus calmly through vaginal.

5.      Prescribing Progesterone

After the operation, Progesterone hormone is prescribed for the patient in order to make uterus ready for accepting fetus. (Injection or suppository) Taking Progesterone needs to be continued until the determination of the pregnancy result. Taking Progesterone must not be cut without the physician’s consultation.

6.      Having blood test for determining pregnancy

If the result of the pregnancy test is positive, injecting Progesterone will be continued according to the physician’s order. Four weeks after he fetus transferring, the fetus condition will be checked by doing sonography and the pregnancy will be approved.

WHAT ARE SOME INSTRUCTIONS THAT MUST BE OBSERVED BEFORE DOING IVF?

The prescribed medications and injections must be kept in cool place. meantime they must be prevented to be frozen.

Pay attention to the dates that are arranged by the clinic. In case of having delay, the treatment is interrupted.

The clinic may need to contact the patient while having treatment. So pay attention in giving your phone number and address to the receptionist. The patient information will be confidential.

The date and method of injection is really important. It is necessary to follow all the medication orders carefully.

Hypodermic injections must be done on inner side of the arm, forearm or abdomen.

Being calm and having good spiritual condition are helpful in the success of the procedures. So keep calm.

IS IT POSSIBLE FOR THE IVF TREATMENT PERIOD TO BE CANCLED AND NOT FINISHED?

1)      Unfortunately all the IVF cycles don’t result in pregnancy and they may be canceled because of below reasons:

2)      Not getting suitable response from ovary to the ovulation stimulating medications

3)      All the follicles haven’t always got ovum, and sometimes there is no ovum after taking them.

4)      It is possible for the ovum not to be fertilized in the laboratory area, Or the fetus don’t have the necessary quality to be transferred into the uterus.

5)      In conditions where the ovum is too much sensitive to the ovulation stimulating medications (occurring OHSS symptoms), the type of treatment will be determined based on the patient’s condition and the physician’s discretion.
